The building, designed by architect Samuel Tarbet and opened in 1914, serves was the home for the Kansas City Women's Athenaeum Club, which was founded in 1894 and focused on cultural programming for local women. With club membership dwindling, the building was sold to the Kansas City alumnae chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 2015. The LaSalle apartment building, a 14-story building which served as apartments, a hotel, and senior housing and was demolished in 2001, can be seen to the east of the Athenaeum.

The 14-story building also served as apartments and a hotel and was demolished in 2001.

Founded in 1894 through a collaboration of existing women’s clubs, the Kansas City Athenaeum is one of the oldest women’s organizations in the area. The Kansas City Athenaeum Collection contains minutes, yearbooks, scrapbooks, photographs, operational and financial records, clubhouse information and building plans, and ephemera documenting the history of the club.

The last official meeting of the Woman's City Club and the Presidents and Past Presidents General Assembly, both formed more than 90 years ago, will be held April 2009. A third club, the Kansas City Athenaeum, formed in 1894, hopes "to sell off many of its heirlooms at a public auction at the clubhouse at 900 E. Linwood Blvd." Article discusses the three clubs.

A history of women's organizations and women civic leaders in Kansas City. Beginning the in the 1850s and continuing forward, women in Kansas City sought to form groups that addressed issues of education, charity, morality, reform, and equality. Organizations such as the Kansas City Athenaeum, the Women's City Club, and the Forward Kansas City Committee created an environment of female civic engagement and activism, playing a key role in overhauling the politically-corrupt city government in the elections of 1940.
