File containing a National Register of Historic Places nomination form for the Athenaeum Club, "the oldest [surviving] women's club in Kansas City, dating from 1894" with its own building constructed in 1915 at 900 East Linwood Boulevard. Biographical sketch (on page 6) of its architect, Samuel Tarbet (ca. 1871-1945), designer of "a wide variety of buildings" in Kansas City starting in 1906 including "the Olathe, Kansas, City Hall in 1910; the Robert Sutherland residence at 410 Gladstone in 1913; and the Graphic Arts Building at 934 Wyandotte in 1917."

The building, designed by architect Samuel Tarbet and opened in 1914, serves was the home for the Kansas City Women's Athenaeum Club, which was founded in 1894 and focused on cultural programming for local women. With club membership dwindling, the building was sold to the Kansas City alumnae chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority in 2015. The LaSalle apartment building, a 14-story building which served as apartments, a hotel, and senior housing and was demolished in 2001, can be seen to the east of the Athenaeum.

The 14-story building also served as apartments and a hotel and was demolished in 2001.

Founded in 1894 through a collaboration of existing women’s clubs, the Kansas City Athenaeum is one of the oldest women’s organizations in the area. The Kansas City Athenaeum Collection contains minutes, yearbooks, scrapbooks, photographs, operational and financial records, clubhouse information and building plans, and ephemera documenting the history of the club.

Biographical article on Kansas City accountant, millionaire, and philanthropist James J. Lynn. Born in Louisiana in 1892, Lynn made his way to Kansas City in 1909 and subsequently took accounting jobs with the Missouri Pacific Railroad, Bell Telephone Company, and the U. S. Epperson Underwriting Company. Lynn bought Epperson Underwriting in 1921, renaming it the Lynn Underwriting Company, and later founded Universal Underwriters. In 1932, he became a member of the Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), following the guru Paramahansa Yogananda - later becoming a renowned guru himself under the name Rajarsi Janakananda. Members of the SRF make pilgramages to Kansas City to visit locations associated with Lynn and his work.
